Moreno to Be Buried in State Cemetery
Following Houston Funeral on Tuesday

State Rep. Joe Moreno will be laid to rest Tuesday about a dozen blocks from the pink granite building where he spent a significant part of his adult life fighting for causes dear to the hearts of his Houston constituents and the people of the state as a whole.

Moreno was killed early Friday in a highway crash while returning to Austin from a Houston Rockets game with State Rep. Rafael Anchia of Dallas and Monica Pinon, chief of staff for State Rep. Joe Pickett of El Paso.

Anchia was treated at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin and released Friday. Pinon, however, underwent surgery after reportedly suffering broken bones in the overnight accident.

According to police, the crash occurred after Moreno apparently attempted to overcorrect after the wheels of his pickup truck slipped off the road on Highway 71 near La Grange. Police said the truck flipped several times after striking the median.

Moreno, who was still three months shy of his 41st birthday, dedicated his time and energy to public service at a young age, serving as an aide to former State Rep. Al Luna of Houston before becoming chief of staff and campaign manager for State Rep. Jessica Farrar of Houston. A former Harris County precinct judge, Moreno won a seat in the Texas House in 1998 and was eventually elected to be chairman of the Harris County delegation.

Tall and stocky, Moreno was known as a gentle giant who wasn't afraid to take tough stands when he believed they were in the best interest of his House District 143 constituents in the east Houston area. During his final week he had a prominent voice in a fight in the House over air pollution standards - and his commitment to public education, health care and other critical issues was second to none.

Our hearts and prayers go out to his family in this time of sadness and grief.
