Primary Vote Could Be Nightmare
for Incumbents Based on the Signs

The Texas primary election could be apocalypse for incumbents in the making based on the national climate and trends that have emerged as the lineups for state and federal races have fallen in place this week. The odds for a substantial turnover appear to be highest in the GOP primary on the state House and congressional battlefield

Eleven U.S. House Republicans are facing first-round foes in Texas compared to 10 GOP representatives who are running unopposed in the primary based on the tentative list of candidates that Secretary of State John Scott's office has compiled. Six congressional Democrats from Texas have encountered primary opposition in bids for re-election while four appear to have free passes in the opening round of the 2022 elections.

Thirty Texas House Republicans have attracted primary challenges to various degrees for the seats that they're seeking again next year. Ten Democratic colleagues in the lower chamber have targets on their backs as well in the primary election on March 1. But that includes State Reps. Art Fierro and Claudia Ordaz Perez - a pair of El Paso Democrats who are dueling each other in the first round after the area lost a seat in redistricting in special session this fall.

The list of Texas Republicans in Congress with primary opponents features U.S. Reps. Dan Crenshaw of Houston, Van Taylor of Plano, Pat Fallon of Frisco, Jake Ellzey of Waxahachie, Kay Granger of Fort Worth, Pete Sessions of Waco, Chip Roy of Austin, Tony Gonzales of San Antonio, Michael Burgess of Denton, Michael Cloud of Corpus Christi and John Carter of Georgetown.

Republican State Senator Donna Campbell and Democratic State Senator John Whitmire of Houston are the only legislators who are on the ballot for new terms in the Capitol's east wing with opposition at the primary polls in March. Channon Cain of Lakeway plans to run to Campbell's right in round one. Whitmire drew an eleventh hour challenge when Houston nurse Molly Cook filed to run against him in the Democratic primary in 2022.
