Speaker Flirts with OT as Five Abbott Targets
Losing while Jetton, Smith and Dutton Falter

Capitol Inside
March 5, 2024

Texas Speaker Dade Phelan appears headed for a spring runoff with Donald Trump-christened challenger David Covey of Orange in the House District 21 race after the powerful incumbent looked to be on the verge of getting crushed based on the early vote in the GOP primary election on Tuesday.

A handful of GOP colleagues appeared doomed or in deep trouble tonight including three who Governor Greg Abbott targeted in a school choice revenge crusade in State Reps. Steve Allison of San Antonio, Travis Clardy of Nacogdoches and Glenn Rogers of Graford. Clardy lost to Joanne Shofner of Nacogdoches while Allison and Rogers trailed Marc LaHood of San Antonio and Mike Olcott of Aledo by sums that could be insurmountable.

Two more Abbott targets - State Reps. Ernest Bailes of Shepherd and Hugh Shine of Temple - were trailing challengers who were hovering near 50 percent in Janis Holt of Silsbee and Hillary Hickland of Belton.

GOP State Rep. Jacey Jetton of Sugar Land trailed Matt Morgan in another fight with runoff potential in the early vote in House District 26 where the challenger scored almost 55 percent of the early vote. State Rep. Jill Dutton of Ben Wheeler was losing to Brent Money in a rematch of a special election that she won in January in House District 2. Money led Dutton with almost 56 percent of the vote after 9 p.m.

Republican Shelley Luther was up on State Rep. Reggie Smith of Sherman with 52 percent of the vote in House District 62.

Three House Republicans who Abbott wants to oust - State Reps. DeWayne Burns of Cleburne, John Kuempel of Seguin and Gary VanDeaver of New Boston - looked poised for overtime duels with Helen Kerwin of Glen Rose, Alan Schoolcraft of Universal City and Chris Spencer of Texarkana based on the early vote. Yet another Abbott target - State Rep. Hugh Shine of Temple - was in danger of losing on Tuesday night in House District 55 where challenger Hillary Hickland of Belton garnered 50.2 percent of the early vote compared to 44 percent for the incumbent.

Republican State Reps. Frederick Frazier of McKinney, Justin Holland of Rockwall and Stephanie Klick of Fort Worth appeared poised to advance to runoffs as well with challengers Keresa Richardson, Katrina Pierson and David Lowe respectively. Richardson led Frazier 38 percent to 32 percent based on a combination of early and election day votes.

Republican State Reps. Drew Darby of San Angelo and Stan Lambert of Abilene had leads of 54 percent and 53 percent over Abbott-certified challengers Stormy Bradley of Big Spring and Liz Case Perkins of Tuscola respectively.

Republican Joanne Shofner of Nacogdoches had almost 63 percent of the vote in House District 11 that Clardy has represented for 11 years. San Antonio Republican Marc LaHood led Allison with 54 percent in a House District 121 contest that could go to overtime with a surge by the incumbent at the finish line. Mike Olcott of Aledo jumped out to a big lead on Rogers with nearly 54 percent of the vote after 9 p.m. tonight.

Rookie Republican State Rep. Ellen Troxclair of Lakeway could be destined for OT if returns from Gillespie County where challenger Kyle Biedermann of Fredericksburg knocked her below 50 percent where she was hovering late Tuesday night.

GOP State Rep. Kronda Thimesch of Lewisville held a narrow lead over Mitch Little in the House District 65 race. But 27 other House Republicans were en route to wins over challengers that were lopsided in most cases.
